How to Choose a Doctoral-Level Dissertation Topic

A step-by-step guide to developing a research topic worthy of an Honorary Doctoral Certificate (HDC)

Required for QTI HDC Qualification

Step 1

Start With a Field You Know

Doctoral research demands deep familiarity. Choose a subject area where you already have foundational knowledge — whether from work experience, personal study, or prior education.

✓ Do This

Pick a field you've spent time reading about
Consider your professional or lived experience
Think about problems you encounter regularly

✗ Avoid This

Don't pick a field just because it sounds impressive
Don't choose something you've never read about

Examples

  • Quantum physics if you've studied science
  • Psychology if you work in counseling
  • History if you've studied it independently

Step 2

Identify a Specific Gap or Problem

Doctoral research fills a gap. Ask: 'What question in this field remains unanswered, under-explored, or contested?' The more specific, the better.

✓ Do This

Read existing research to find what's missing
Look for contradictions between studies
Find phenomena that lack theoretical explanation

✗ Avoid This

Don't ask questions that are already fully answered
Don't be too broad — 'climate change' is not a gap

Examples

  • How does X affect Y in population Z?
  • What theoretical framework explains phenomenon P?
  • How do factors A and B interact in context C?

Step 3

Add Specificity and Scope

Transform a broad interest into a focused research question. Add constraints: population, time period, methodology, or theoretical lens. Specificity signals doctoral mastery.

✓ Do This

Add a specific population or context
Specify a time period or geographic scope
Mention the theoretical framework you'll use

✗ Avoid This

Don't leave it vague — 'studying teens' is too broad
Don't try to answer everything in one dissertation

Examples

  • WEAK: 'Social media and teens'
  • STRONG: 'Instagram algorithm changes and identity formation in post-pandemic adolescents (ages 13-17)'
  • STRONG: 'Entropy reversal models in isolated quantum systems: a theoretical framework using density matrix formalism'

Step 4

Frame as a Research Question

Every dissertation answers a question. Frame your topic as a formal research question — this tests whether it's actually researchable and doctoral-level.

✓ Do This

Begin with 'How', 'What', 'Why', or 'To what extent'
Ensure the question can be investigated systematically
Make sure it's open-ended (not yes/no)

✗ Avoid This

Don't ask 'Is X good or bad?' — too simple
Don't ask questions answerable with a Google search

Examples

  • How does prolonged social isolation alter neural plasticity in adults aged 30–50?
  • What theoretical mechanisms explain temporal causality modification in closed quantum systems?
  • To what extent do economic incentives shape historical revisionism in post-conflict societies?

Step 5

Test Your Topic for Doctoral Quality

Before committing, run your topic through this checklist. A strong doctoral topic should pass all five criteria.

Original

It hasn't been fully answered before

Complex

It requires deep theoretical or empirical analysis

Specific

It has clear boundaries and scope

Researchable

It can be systematically investigated

Significant

It matters to the field or broader society
